Hotspot Signal (Speed & Stability Tips) | GoFlex Wireless

Support›Boost Hotspot Signal

Use these practical tips to improve hotspot signal, speed, and stability. Small changes in placement can make a big difference. Need a device + plan? Start here: Unlimited Hotspot Plans.

Quick win: Put the hotspot near a window, keep it elevated, and reboot once after moving it.

Step 1 — Best placement (most important)

  • Place the hotspot near a window.
  • Keep it higher (shelf/top of desk).
  • Avoid cabinets, closets, or behind TVs.
  • Move it a few feet and retest (signal changes fast).

Step 2 — Reduce interference

  • Keep away from metal surfaces and thick concrete walls.
  • Avoid placing next to microwaves or routers.
  • Use a solid power source (avoid weak USB ports).
  • Let the device cool—heat can reduce performance.

Step 3 — Improve Wi-Fi inside your home

  • If your hotspot supports it, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for nearby devices.
  • Use 2.4 GHz if you need longer range through walls.
  • Limit the number of connected devices (performance improves).
  • Change Wi-Fi password to prevent unknown devices from joining.

Step 4 — Reboot + refresh connection

  • Power off → wait 10 seconds → power on.
  • After reboot, wait 2–3 minutes for the best connection.
  • Test speed in 2–3 spots and keep the best location.
  • If it’s still weak, try at a different time of day.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Signal is good but speed is slow

Try rebooting, reduce connected devices, and test at a different time. Also make sure your device is using 5 GHz Wi-Fi if close.

Signal keeps dropping

Move the hotspot to a more stable spot (window + elevated), keep it cool, and avoid enclosed spaces.

No service or searching

Move near a window, reboot, and wait 3–5 minutes. If it persists, check activation and SIM seating: Activation guide.

FAQ

Does a window really help?

Yes. Cellular signal often improves near windows because walls and materials reduce signal strength.

Should I use 4G or 5G?

Your hotspot will usually pick the best available network. 5G can be faster, but 4G LTE may be more stable in some areas.

What’s the best place in a house?

Near a window, elevated, away from metal and thick walls. Try a couple of rooms and keep the strongest spot.

What if I need more coverage inside the home?

Place the hotspot centrally for Wi-Fi range, or use 2.4 GHz for longer range. If your setup supports it, consider a Wi-Fi extender.
